Academic counselling was held on 24 Aug 2021, in Cheng Yu Tung Building, CUHK Campus. Over 240 Integrated BBA (IBBA) students came back on campus to the academic counselling session and welcoming activity.
The counselling was started by a warm welcoming speech given by Dr. Anson Au Yeung, Co-director of IBBA programme. After that, Dr. Fred Ku, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) and Co-director of IBBA programme introduced curriculum and students’ policies of CUHK Business School.
Student ambassadors and freshmen exchanged ideas in subgroups during the counselling. Ten advisors joined the counselling as well, including Dr. Andrew Yuen, Dr. David Chow, Mr. Sunny Ha, Dr. Chris Leung, Prof. Darwin Choi, Dr. Edwin Mok, Dr. Frank Ng, Dr. Joyce Lun and Dr. Rosette Leung. They all had a fruitful exchange with freshmen.
This year, we had special decorations and activities to welcome our freshmen and to celebrate our return to normal campus life. A welcoming arch was built at the entrance of Cheng Yu Tung Building to show our excitement towards freshmen and the upcoming school year. The staircase was decorated to fit in and to shape the atmosphere of such a blessed event.
Moreover, booths were held by academic advisors and student ambassadors to meet and greet freshmen. Blessings have been sent from student ambassadors to freshmen to wish their 4-year fruitful journey at CUHK Business School. Freshmen were also encouraged to walk in and chat with our academic advisors and student ambassadors. Not only academic questions were asked and answered, but all feelings and experiences were exchanged and treasured. This is in line with our spirit “We care, We share! Chat with us!”
In CUHK Business School, the mentality and thoughts of students are as important as all kinds of achievement to us. We hope to provide a perfect environment and nurture all-rounded business leaders.

It feels good to be lost in the right direction. The future is full of uncertainty, many unexpected events had occurred which mess up our original plans. Although there is a lot of confusion in our path, never lose your energy and passion, be an optimistic person, and try different things. I believe every day will be the best moment in life.
As a business student, I believe CUHK has well-established mechanisms to equip us for the future, by challenging us to excel in academics and extra-curricular activities. Through my learning journey, I was very fortunate enough to have two mentors who provided me with advice towards my career plans and entrepreneurship venture. Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend the GBA Global Innovation Summit, Globsec NextGen Forum for broadening my vision towards the business world. I believe that CUHK offer a wide stream of opportunities for those strive for success and is the perfect place for people who would like to be an impactful global business leader and make a difference to society!
One of our final year IBBA students, Scarlett Niu, joined the Commonwealth Bank of Australia as an Asia Regional HR Intern for 1 year. Scarlett concluded her 1-year internship as a very rewarding experience, “For me, the best part is that I worked directly under Vanessa, Head of Asia HR. To me, Vanessa is like a mentor rather than a manager, she likes to teach me more and give me more tasks to practice.”, she mentioned.
Scarlett was assigned several tasks during her internship, including but not limited to, running HR data analytics, planning and organizing Diversity & Inclusion and Mental wellbeing activities, conducting monthly orientation webinars, drafting employment contracts and letters. She enjoyed working in the vibrant and friendly atmosphere in the CBA’s office, “CBA has a very internationalized environment, I work with colleagues from Australia and other Asia countries every day. My English communication skill improved a lot throughout the year. The office environment was also very nice — senior level managers chat with you like they are your friends and there are regular events such as the Christmas party.”, she added.
The online Thematic Talk and Integrated BBA Admission Talk, with Dr. Anson Au Yeung (Programme Co-Director, Asian Business Studies) and Dr. Fred Ku (Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Studies), attracted audiences from diverse backgrounds during the CUHK Programme Taster Fair on 10 April. The event provided prospective students with a taste of attending a business lecture, followed by a brief introduction of the IBBA Programme.
Dr. Anson Au Yeung has chosen the most discussed incident that happened in the stock market recently as the topic of this year’s thematic talk: GameStop Short Squeeze. With the help of simple graphs and Dr. Au Yeung’s detailed explanation, audiences could easily comprehend the seemingly complex terms and concepts behind this financial event. Most importantly, prospective students can have a taste of what they would learn if they chose to study business and gain a better understanding about the business world today.
During the IBBA admission talk, Dr. Ku highlighted the programme’s comprehensiveness and flexibility in helping students build a solid knowledge foundation for future successes. “In addition to our prestigious business education programme, our dual degree programme with IE Business School (of IE University, Spain) also provides students with ample international exposure, to develop their global perspective in today’s ultra-competitive job market.”

A student team from the Chinese University of Hong Kong emerged as champions in the World Asian Case Competition (WACC) 2020 by presenting a thorough investigation and technical analysis to the business brand posed during the competition. Team members Su Zie Lee, Han Na Do, Hyo Eun Kim, and Jeyeong Lee (all Integrated BBA year 1 students) dominated the competition and earned the Grand Award, the AAB World Cup Trophy, and financial scholarship support of US $2,000. Prof. Tingting Fan, the team’s advisor, also received the Best Advisor Award for her outstanding guidance to the team.
WACC is an annual case competition organised by the Academy of Asian Business (AAB), which invites students from top institutions around the world to demonstrate their ability to think strategically about complex business issues. This year, the competition theme “How Asian Brands Soar” challenged students to investigate Asian Brands that achieved significant success and became globally powerful brands.
The team worked on a case that demonstrated how a global-minded company, Bibigo under CJ Foodville, on successfully rising as an international brand by expanding its business in global HMR key markets. The team analysed the company’s strategically tough decisions toward closing down under-performing restaurants chains, and implementing clear positioning strategies of remaking a ‘mandu’ anchor brand with successful globalisation.
As the competition champions, the team’s case will be published in the organiser’s book series “How Asian Business Soar”, which would be available in the world’s top universities and Amazon.

We look forward to learning more in the future and expand our intellectual horizons and insights on business practices.

By comparing the results and presentations of other teams, we identified areas that we should improve on, and were eagerly looking forward to utilising the experience when competing in future case competitions.

UGO: How did you hear about the VCOC Case Competition?
J&CY: Our team came across the VCOC competition from the HKSTP Ventures LinkedIn page. Since we have never partaken in a VC-themed competition before, we were excited to expand our horizons.
UGO: Have you ever competed in a case competition before this? How did you use that experience to form your strategy?
J&CY: We have participated in case competitions before, such as the Academic Cup hosted by the CUHK Business School. We are glad to have competed beforehand, the experience has indeed prepared us for the competition.
